Birkenhead United capped off a successful 2018 season with wide ranging recognition at the Harbour Sport Excellence Awards which were held on Friday November 16.
Birkenhead United was the most successful club on the night taking out:
- Volunteer of the Year (Jaron Burbidge)
- Club of the Year
- Team of the Year
- Sportsman of the Year (Damien Hirst)
This evening is a once a year opportunity to celebrate the success of sport in the North Harbour region and saw sporting greatness past present and future and a total of 321 people attended the event including past and present North Harbour athletes, Harbour Sport board members, representatives from Regional Sporting Organizations, clubs and sponsors.
The Sport Excellence Awards consist of three award categories;
Sport Acknowledgement Awards
The Sport Acknowledgement Awards give each sporting code in the North Harbour region the opportunity to acknowledge an individual who has excelled in their commitment to their sport.
Sports Excellence Awards
The Sport Excellence Award categories highlight the outstanding performances by individual athletes, teams, coaches, referees/umpires, volunteers and events in the North Harbour region. This category recognises the achievements from one sporting year.
Legends of Harbour Sports Hall of Fame
The Legends of Harbour honours athletes who have achieved excellence at the highest level and have also given back to sport in the Harbour Region. These nominations were put before an independent judging panel and selected based on a set list of criteria. Two athletes were inducted into the Hall of Fame at this year’s event who truly were, “Legends of Harbour.”
Over 120 nominations across various sports across the region. The nominations were judged by an independent panel of experts representing sport, media and business, and finalists were chosen in each category.
